How Do We Maintain Happiness?

In our happiness zoom discussion, participants shared their insights and personal strategies used to develop a positive mentality. We discovered a correlation between happiness and maintaining a positive mindset. There is no definitive answer to the question, “how to be happy all the time?” However, we can make some small changes to our perception of negative situations. For example, turn the question, “why is this happening to me?” into “what is this situation teaching me?” It will help you see past the negativity of the moment and reflect on changes that will be made in the future.

A big element of happiness and self satisfaction comes from the way we deal with negativity, particularly negativity from other people. In our zoom, we spent majority of the time discussing how to see past other’s negative comments and unnecessary toxicity in our lives. One important thing to remember is this: no matter what you do in life, there are always going to be people who will try to bring you down and find something negative to say. Of course, it’s hard to ignore their comments, but understanding that YOUR life and happiness is not determined by other’s opinions of you is an essential component of a positive mentality.

Another important element of well being and happiness is taking care of yourself first. Your happiness and mental health is most important. It is of course important to look after the important people in your life, but if you are putting too much energy into them and not enough energy into yourself, this can become problematic. Essentially, remember that it is okay to take days to work on yourself. It’s okay to cancel plans with others if you’re not in the right mental state at that moment. It’s okay to take care of yourself. Self care and self love are the most important elements of happiness.
